San Francisco’s Planning Department plans to make Central SOMA San Francisco’s first €œecodistrict€ by €œencouraging developers, neighbors, city departments and the business community to collaborate on everything from grey-water systems to local energy production to urban agriculture€ (SF Examiner).

The plan encompasses the part of South of Market that will be most directly served by the new Fourth Street rail corridor, between Second and Sixth Streets and Market and Townsend Streets.

€œThe Central SoMa Plan proposes to build off the neighborhood’s success, while addressing many of its challenges, with a comprehensive strategy that will address such issues as land use, building size and heights, transportation, the public realm (including sidewalks and open space), preservation of historic buildings and environmental sustainability.€ (SF Planning Department)

The plan’s goals include supporting transit-oriented growth, shaping the area with both city and neighborhood contexts, maintaining economic and physical diversity, improving streets, adding additional open space, and adding other elements of €œcomplete communities€, and creating a model for sustainable growth. The plan is currently under refinement and environmental review, with completion of the review expected in late 2014.
